Alumni Summer College

Summer College postcard

“Twenty years after Tiananmen Square, the Chinese Communist Party apparatus shows every sign of being in control. The economy has continued to grow at 9 percent a year since 1978, fueling China’s rise as a global power. There’s little sign of opposition. But rising living standards tend to produce political discontent and have driven the democratic change throughout most of the rest of East Asia. Samuel Huntington, the late political scientist, argued that regimes become vulnerable at a level of per capita income that China is fast approaching.” JACOB WEISBERG, NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE

SCHEDULE

The Summer College runs June 5-7 on Hampden-Sydney’s campus and will feature two popular former college presidents, William Dorrill (Longwood) and Sam Wilson (Hampden-Sydney), as well as faculty from the College with China experience: Drs. Kenneth Townsend, Saranna Thornton, and J. Z. Zhao. Moreover, experts from government and academia will be on hand to offer critical expertise on panels ranging from the history of the recent development of China’s breakout as a world superpower, to the future of China’s military influence on Asia and the world, to the impact of China’s activities on the environment. Key speakers will include the current chair of the Congressional China Caucus, Congressman Randy Forbes, R-VA, and Admiral Joseph Prueher, former Ambassador to China. This year we still offer our economical price structure to encourage you to bring your family and friends. To make your reservations, call the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Office at (434) 223-6148 or contact alumni@hsc.edu.
